The geological substratum consists of geological karst phenomena which gives the region a very picturesque look. The Park is the largest compact deposit of limestone in Romania ,crossed by Nera river ,giving birth to a sector of wild gorges 20 km long , with all possible karst phenomena(limestone pavements, dolines, dry valleys, blind valleys, caves, karst springs, etc. ).
The landscape of the gorges is dominated by steep walls beetled in some places, on whose basis Nera has created numerous shackled meanders and erosion. Sectors of tunnels and paths of access dug by man are also to be noticed. The altitude varies between 160 m and 1160 m.
